Larry Purcell was born February 25, 1936. I was born and raised in the St.
Patrick community south of Atchison. I attended St. Patrick's Grade School.
After grade school my parents sold the family farm and we moved to Atchison.
I attended Atchison High school throughout my junior year. I enlisted in the
United States Army and was stationed in Manheim, Germany for 2 years. During
my stay in the military I finished my high school education. I was assigned
to the 62nd AAA as a voice radio operator and field repairman. After my tour
of duty with the Army I returned to Atchison for a short period of time. I
worked at Cramer Machine Shop in Leavenworth, Kansas as a machine operator.
After a couple of years I moved to Omaha, Nebraska where I enrolled in the
Universal Trade School. There I studied refrigeration and air conditioning.
After completing 2 years of advanced commercial air condition courses I went
to work at Eppley Air Field as a terminal maintenance supervisor for 2 years.
We moved back to Atchison where I went to work at the Atchison Hospital as a
maintenance engineer. I also acquired my First Class Combustion Engineers
License for the States of Kansas and Missouri. I received my Master Plumbing
License before leaving the Atchison Hospital. When I left the Atchison
Hospital I became self employed in the air conditioning, heating and plumbing
business. In 1990 my wife and I opened Purcell's Landing next to Independence
Park on the Missouri River. It is a small restaurant and only open on the
weekends. It has been a successful venture now that I am semi-retired. My
wife and I have been married since 1954 and have 4 children and 10
grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
