Human Resources - Benefit Program


The City of Atchison is committed to attracting and retaining a competent work force. This objective can be accomplished by providing an excellent fringe benefit package and a solid retirement plan. Financially secure employees will be more fully satisfied, exhibit a more pleasant attitude, and will continue to be productive and efficient. The City of Atchison provides the following programs to its employees to help accomplish these goals.

  • KPERS/KP&F RETIREMENT PLANS -The City contributes (3.22% in 2004) towards employees under KPERS and (11.13% in 2004) towards KP&F employees. After one year of full-time service employees under KPERS contribute 4% towards retirement. Employees eligible for KP&F contribute 7% towards retirement immediately upon hire.

  • PAY PLAN - The City Commission reviews the pay plan for adjustments as needed.

  • HEATH CARE - The City currently subsidizes approximately 75% of the health care premiums. Health care includes dental coverage. All full-time employees are eligible to participate.

  • SECTION 125 - Allows employee to pay certain medical premiums with pre-tax dollars, thus increasing the employee’s disposable income.

  • EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE - The City’s educational program has been suspended by the City Commission until further notice.

  • EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - Professional counseling service with a maximum of two free visits for the employee and each member of their immediate family.

  • ICMA, METROPOLITAN & EQUI-VEST - City employees may participate in deferred compensation plans offered by the City. The amount selected is invested for the employee and is not subject to federal or state income tax until withdrawn.

  • CREDIT UNION - All full-time employees are eligible to participate in the Credit Union #1 of Kansas through payroll deduction.

  • LONGEVITY - Commencing with the month following completion of five (5) years of actual continuous service as a full-time employee, each employee shall receive an additional amount of $48.00 per year for each year of service up to a maximum of $1000.00.

  • LEAVES - Holidays - All full-time employees are eligible to earn eleven (11) holidays per year which includes one (1) floating holiday for the employee’s birthday. Sick Leave - full-time forty (40) hour employees accrue 3.7 hours bi-weekly (12 days per year), fifty-six (56) hour employees accrue 5.17 hours bi-weekly. Vacation Leave - full-time forty (40) hour employees earn ten (10) days per year, fifty-six (56) hr. employees earn 112 hrs. per year. After five (5) years of service this amount increases.
